Eleven teams ranked in the top 10 of the AP Poll lost games over the past three weeks of college football. ESPN Research confirmed this total ties the record for the most losses by top-10 teams in any three-week span of a regular season. The previous time such a streak occurred was in 2007.
The volatility of the recent schedule was evident in Week 8. South Carolina defeated Tennessee, ending the Volunteers' playoff run. Texas Tech lost to Cincinnati, and USC fell to Wisconsin after managing only seven points off a bye week. These results contributed to the high number of elite team losses during the period.
BYU held the No. 2 ranking following a victory over Notre Dame but dropped that position after losing to UCF in double overtime. The Cougars averaged 3.2 yards per carry in that game due to the absence of running back LJ Martin. Quarterback Bear Bachmeier completed 16 of 32 passes in the loss, marking a sharp decline from their previous performance.
Other high-profile teams faced difficulties on the field. Indiana defeated Michigan 13-6 in overtime, capping a game where the Wolverines were limited to 54 rushing yards. Alabama beat Texas A&M to secure a 6-2 record, though the Crimson Tide gained only 68 rushing yards on 28 carries. Utah overcame a 10-0 halftime deficit to defeat Houston 21-13, extending their winning streak to seven games.
The AP Poll reflects these shifts in team performance. Miami remains at No. 1 after a 52-23 win over Pitt, where wide receiver Malachi Toney caught 16 passes for 194 yards. Ohio State is No. 3 following a bye week, preparing to play without starting quarterback Julian Sayin, who is out indefinitely with an elbow injury. Georgia sits at No. 4 after a 27-24 loss to Auburn, which limited their rushing attack to 113 yards.
Notre Dame is currently No. 5 after a bye week that followed a narrow loss to BYU. UCLA is No. 6, securing a 28-10 victory over Michigan State with 245 rushing yards. Indiana is No. 7, Kentucky is No. 8, and Utah is No. 9. Alabama is No. 10, Wake Forest is No. 11, and LSU is No. 12 after dominating their previous two opponents. Texas is No. 13, having beaten Ole Miss despite a third-quarter struggle.
The distribution of wins and losses across these teams has reset the landscape for the College Football Playoff. Teams that previously held strong positions have seen their rankings shift due to recent performances. The upcoming schedule includes critical matchups that will further define the playoff field, with several teams preparing for conference title implications.
